Didymosphenia geminata

A single celled alga (diatom) that is microscopic individually, but forms dense colonies that cover aquatic substrata. These colonies ooze a mucus like substance called mucilage that has earned them the name "Rock Snot" by angler's in New Zealand. According to the United States Environemtal Protection Agency, recent blooms have been confirmed in Colorado, Utah, and South Dakota.

Southwest Occurences:
A recent report of this species has been reported in Arizona in Oak Creek, a tributary of the Verde River.
